AppDeploy vs Jamf

AppDeploy and Jamf compared for private apps on iPhone, iPad and Mac: a branded app store, device management where you need it, and published prices.

Updated

The short answer

Jamf is a broad Apple device-management and security platform, priced by quote.

AppDeploy is a focused platform for private and internal app distribution on Apple devices. Employees get a branded portal for approved apps, and private apps install on enrolled company iPhones and iPads. Device management (AutoDeploy, with the first 5 devices free) covers the devices that receive them: iPhones and iPads, and Macs on macOS 14 or later.

The two are not mutually exclusive. Apple Business (formerly Apple Business Manager) can connect to more than one device management service and assign devices to different services, so an organisation that already runs Jamf can bring in AppDeploy for some devices without switching everything at once. If both use Apps and Books licences, give each service its own organisational unit and content token rather than sharing one; the FAQ below sets out Apple's guidance.

Typical use caseAn organisation with one or more private iPhone or iPad apps for staff, contractors or partners, that wants one branded portal for those apps and device management for the company devices that receive them.An organisation that manages and secures its Apple devices centrally, where app delivery is one part of a wider device-management and security programme.

What AppDeploy covers

AppDeploy manages iPhones, iPads and Macs on macOS 14 or later. It does not manage Android devices, Apple TV or Apple Vision Pro, does not include antivirus or third-party app patching, and does not collect or store FileVault recovery keys.

Why choose AppDeploy

Choose AppDeploy when the requirement is getting private apps onto company iPhones and iPads with evidence, without the cost and process of a broad device-management platform.

  • Your main need is getting one or more internal iPhone or iPad apps to staff, contractors or partners, not managing every setting on their devices.
  • You want a branded employee portal, release history, and a record of app requests and installs on managed devices, in one workspace.
  • Some company-owned devices need managed installs: the first 5 devices are free, and further devices are priced per device.
  • You want company Macs in the same workspace as your app delivery: AutoDeploy manages Macs on macOS 14 or later, and each Mac counts as one AutoDeploy device.
  • You already use Jamf for Macs or a managed fleet and want AppDeploy for other company devices.

Do you need full MDM just to distribute internal apps?

Not always. Apple provides routes that work without device management. Paid Custom Apps can be distributed with redemption codes through Apple Business, Unlisted apps are reached through a direct App Store link, and organisations eligible for the Apple Developer Enterprise Program can let employees install in-house apps from a website. Through AppDeploy, in-house apps install on enrolled company devices.

Device management becomes necessary when an app must install without the user's action, when you need to remove an app remotely, or when you need the device to report what is installed. Apple also states that a device management service is required for managed distribution of apps and books licences, and that the organisation keeps ownership of licences it revokes or reassigns only under managed distribution, not with redeemable codes.

Apple Business includes built-in device management, and Apple says a device must be enrolled before it can receive apps or settings. AppDeploy works the same way: private apps install on enrolled company iPhones and iPads, so the question is which devices should receive them. The 1–3 app decision guide walks through that choice, and the enterprise iOS app distribution guide compares the main Apple routes.

A Jamf alternative for private apps

If the real job is getting internal apps to staff, contractors or partners, AppDeploy is built for it: its branded portal lists approved apps, private apps install on enrolled company iPhones and iPads, and AutoDeploy manages the iPhones, iPads and Macs on macOS 14 or later that need management.

What AppDeploy offers is a branded portal where employees find approved apps, Apple Business licence handling, release controls for the devices you manage, and AutoDeploy for the company iPhones, iPads and Macs your apps install on. The private app distribution and MDM guide explains when device management is needed, Mac management sets out what AppDeploy does on Macs, and AppDeploy pricing lists the current plans.

AppDeploy is built for production apps that staff rely on every day. TestFlight builds expire after 90 days, so they are not a production route.

Frequently asked questions

Is AppDeploy a Jamf alternative?
For private app distribution to iPhone and iPad, yes, and AutoDeploy also manages Macs on macOS 14 or later. AppDeploy covers a branded portal for approved apps and installation and management on enrolled devices, where the person may be asked to accept an install. It is not an alternative for Android device management or Jamf's security products, and it does not collect or store FileVault recovery keys.
Can I use AppDeploy and Jamf together?
Yes. Apple Business can connect to more than one device management service and assign each device to one of them, so you can keep Jamf on the devices it already manages and use AppDeploy for the rest. Plan the Apps and Books licences first. Apple lets an additional service use a content token for an organisational unit other than the primary one, with the licences it needs moved there, and warns that a token left with an external service when you switch to the built-in service causes inconsistencies in app licence inventory and app assignment failures. So give Jamf and AppDeploy separate organisational units and content tokens rather than uploading the same token to both.
Does AppDeploy manage Macs?
Yes, with the first 5 devices free. AutoDeploy enrols Macs on macOS 14 or later with an enrolment link or zero-touch through Apple Business, installs Apps and Books apps and signed packages, keeps macOS up to date, applies a security baseline and compliance rules, and can restart or shut down a supervised Mac. AppDeploy support can switch on lock and erase once your workspace's two-step verification policy covers administrators. AppDeploy does not collect or store FileVault recovery keys. Each Mac counts as one AutoDeploy device.
Does AppDeploy support Android?
Only for app delivery: signed Android APK delivery through the portal is available on the Enterprise plan. AppDeploy does not manage Android devices.
How much does AppDeploy cost?
Up to 5 managed devices are free. Each further device is £1 a month or £10 a year; Distribution, your own branded app store and release controls, is £29 a month or £219 a year, with or without devices; Enterprise is priced by agreement. Prices are in GBP, excluding VAT, GST and other sales taxes.
Do employees need to enrol their iPhones to use AppDeploy?
To install private apps, yes: private apps install on enrolled company iPhones and iPads. Enrolment also enables configuration profiles and device actions, and the person may be asked to accept an install.
